Cigar Background: This cigar is made by Alberto Medina of PIO Cigars. The story behind PIO Cigar Company is quite interesting. From what I gather someone tried stealing the PIO name from Alberto and he was in legal limbo for about three years. About a year ago he released his PIO VI Overture 1996 Series which is limited to 600 numbered boxes. The boys over at Tex Cigar got him to make this cigar for them and according to a letter from Tex Cigars, the blend is similar to the Overture series however the wrapper is an Ecuadorian Criollo instead of the Ecuadorian Sumatra. This particular cigar has not been release by Tex Cigars yet but should be available fairly soon.

First Impression: This is flat out, an ugly cigar. The wrapper has noticeable color variation, and is full of veins, and tooth. When I pinch the cigar it is fairly lumpy and I also noticed the seams where the wrapper meets the cigar looks like it was cut very unevenly. The cigars that I got came unbanded so there was nothing to distract me from the appearance of the wrapper. Let’s see if this thing smokes better than it looks.

Flavors: Upon lighting this cigar I was pleasantly surprised. It has a nice woody core with notes of leather, spice and almonds. The flavors don’t very much throughout the cigar but they are balanced very nicely. The body of this cigar starts out a solid medium, then creeps into the full spectrum during the second third and then goes back to being medium for the final third; awesome variation in body that you don’t get with many cigars.

Smoking Characteristics: The cigar had a nice draw but the burn was uneven and required multiple touch ups. The ash was a medium gray color and didn’t hold on very long.

Final Thoughts: Although the cigar is ugly as sin and burns like a turd, the flavors and body variation kept me very interested and were quite enjoyable. Overall I enjoyed this cigar a lot and is by far the best bundle cigar I have had in a while.

Worth a Try: Yes
Buy again: I do not know the price yet but more than likely I will pick up a bundle
Nubaility: Smokes a little hot at the end but I’ll say medium
Compare To: This one is tough but the most similar cigars I can think of is the Perdomo Fresh Rolled and Tatuaje P
