Cigar Review: Pinar Del Rio Oscuro

Pinar Del Rio Oscuro
Wrapper: Dominican Habano Oscuro
Binder: Dominican Habano
Filler: Nicaraguan, Dominican
Made In: Dominican Republic
Size: 6.5×52 Torpedo
Price: About $6.75

Cigar Background: Pinar del Rio is headed by Abe Flores and is rolled in the Fabrica Don Leoncio in the Dominican Republic. Abe primary uses Dominican tobacco in all of his cigars but states that they are bold, complex, and full flavor, which is usually not associated with Dominican tobacco.
Appearance & Construction: The cigar has a nice looking reddish brown wrapper with a nice looking gold and black band and a splash of North Carolina blue. The cigar is pretty solid to the touch and is a little lumpy in some areas.

Smoking Characteristics: The cigar has a nice draw that produces a medium amount of smoke. The burn was a little wavy but acceptable to most individuals and the ash was fairly flaky and made a bit of a mess. The body of the cigar was medium to full, while I would say the strength is more in the medium category.

Flavors: The cigar starts off with a nice sexy combination of sweet oaky flavors, earth, coffee and some citrus notes and a touch of pepper. The second third brings much of the same however the final third the flavors really come together and a nice cocoa flavor is added.

Final Thoughts: What a great cigar. The flavors are nice and bold, yet complex and balanced. There are not a lot of cigars that come from the Domincan that are this bold and flavorful and goes to show you what can be done with tobacco in that country and that not all bold and full bodied cigars cigars have to come from Nicaragua. Litto Gomes of La Flor Dominicana is the largest cigar maker to make full bodied bold cigars from the Dominican but I really like this Pinar del Rio. Granted it does have some leafs from Nicaragua in the filler but this cigar does remind me of some Nicaraguan cigars. All in all I think this is a great cigar and if you are into the medium to full bodied cigars, this one will do you just fine.
