Cigar Review: El Cobre by Oliva Cigars

Cigar: El Cobre by Oliva
Wrapper: Connecticut
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Made In: Nicaragua
Price: $99.95 per Box of 25

Initial thoughts: This cigar is a private label cigar made by Oliva, makers of The Serie V, Master Blend, Nub Cigars and many more. El Cobre is the name of an old mining town in Cuba; not sure if the dark wrapper is why they chose the name but it would be fitting if they did. The band is very simple and the cigar is constructed nicely

Flavors: This cigar imparts dry earthy flavors with some sweet chocolate and coffee notes backed by a nice peppery spice. Flavors remain generally the same throughout the cigar and the body is full.

Smoking Characteristics: Nice draw even with the large size, burn was fairly even, ash was nice and compact. No complaints with the way this cigar smoked

Final Thoughts: The size I smoked was a Churchill which I am not a big fan of because of the time it takes to smoke them. In a Churchill size the cigar really has to be complex and take me on a marvelous journey with body variation and flavor changes. This cigar just doesn’t have that complexity. In the Churchill size this cigar is just too boring for me. Overall I enjoyed the cigar but I think I would have enjoyed it much more had it been in a smaller size.

Worth a Shot: Yes, full bodied cigar smokers will adore this beast
Buy it Again: Yes but in a smaller size, probably the Robusto
Enjoyablity: On this cigar it was medium but I think it would be high with a smaller size

Nice review! The El Cobre is one of my favourites! I prefer the Torpedo to the Churchill…I haven’t tried the Robusto or the Toro, but I think the slightly smaller ring gauge of the Toro might be interesting.

Man, I’ve never had the El Cobre, but I am a Padron WHORE and really like the JdN Antanos! I need to pick up some of these!!

After a talk with a B & M owner that I gave an El Cobre to he believes this is the standard issue Oliva private label in a Maduro that Oliva makes for a bunch of B & M’s. He carries the Corojo private line with his custom labels & name over the Maduro but remembers smoking a sample and said its the same exact cigar.
