Cigar Review: El Triunfador

Cigar:El Triunfador Lancero

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Origin: Nicaragua
Size: 7.5×38 Lancero
Price: $202.50 per box of 25; $45 per 5 pack

Initial Thoughts: This is a nice looking cigar with the traditional Cuban pigtail cap. As with all of Pete Johnson’s cigars, this one is expertly rolled with no noticeable defects. The Lancero size has been a craze in the cigar industry lately and I could take it or leave it. I get the wrapper to filler ratio is geared towards making you taste more of the wrapper but it’s a goofy looking cigar. If anything it is different but I still like my robusto’s and torpedo’s. Let’s fire it up and see what happens.
Flavors: Cedary core with notes of cream and espresso almost like cappuccino with a little bit of vanilla. Finish is slightly dry and doesn’t hang out on the palate very long. In the second third I got a bit of mocha which I really enjoyed. Overall this cigar is extremely well balanced, very smooth and relaxed. The body of the cigar is a solid medium
Smoking Characteristics: I don’t smoke very many lancero’s but the ash falls off way too soon for my comfort with this cigar and made a mess of my laptop. The worst part is the ash never reached the half inch mark. The draw was also a little snug but that is how lancero’s are. The burn was even and required no touch ups; however I would expect that from such a small ring gauge cigar. Overall the cigar didn’t produce that much smoke.
Final Thoughts: I thought this cigar was good. The flavors were good but I was expecting a little more from Pete on this one, but maybe I had the wrong expectations. The tight draw, lack of smoke, and the ash falling off prematurely was kind of a bummer too but is not a heavy weight as to how I feel about this cigar. At the $8-$9 price range and what the cigar is, I think it is slightly over priced. This will defiantly be an occasional cigar that I will pull out when I am in the mood for something smooth and relaxing.

Worth a Try: If you can still find them pick one or two up but if you can’t, you are not going to be missing the next big thing in my book
Buy Again: I have couple more so I am good, but it is definitely not box worthy in my opinion especially for the price
Enjoyablility: Medium
