Cigar Reviews – Pinar Del Rio Habano Sun Grown

Wrapper: Dominican Sun Grown Habano
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Made In: Dominican Republic
Size: 5×50 Robusto
Price: About $6 per single from Titletown Tobacco

Appearance & Construction: A decent looking cigar with some larger veins on the light brown colored wrapper. There is also some lumpiness when I feel the cigar. The roll of the cigar looks good and the seams are evenly cut.

Smoking Characteristics: The draw was good on the Pinar Del Rio Habano Sun Grown. The burn was okay but was pretty wavy and required some touch ups along the way. The ash was solid and held on for a decent time. The body of this cigar is medium and the strength is average.

Flavors: The first third of the cigar has some earthy and salty notes along with some pepper and a hint of lime, which was quit strange. The second third of the cigar the spice backs down a bit and gives way to a nice nuttiness. The final third turned a bit sour, but after a good purge the cigar went back to being earthy and nutty.

Final Thoughts: All in all I thought this was a good cigar. The sourness in the final third, which I think was from the cigar getting too hot, was pretty unpleasant. From time to time the final third of any cigar can get a bit off kilter but a purge usually helps that. For those who do not know what a purge is let me quickly explain. It is when you blow out of the cigar (instead of drawing into your mouth) and I will put my lighter up to the lit foot and sometimes get some flames that come out of the foot. This will usually burn out some impurities in the cigar and get it back to where it was. Although this cigar is not my profile I will say this was a good cigar and I could see a lot of cigar enthusiast enjoying this one.

  1. I wasn’t quite so lucky with this cigar. However, I suspect they’re fairly inconsistent.
