Cigar Reviews – Rocky Patel 1961

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Binder: Honduran
Filler: Nicaraguan
Made In: Nicaragua (Tabacalera Villa Cuba)
Size: 6×52 – Toro
Price: About $9 per single

This cigar was released at this year’s IPCPR trade show in New Orleans and is the first cigar produced at Rocky’s new factory in Nicaragua called Tabacalera Villa Cuba. The Rocky Patel 1961 was made to commemorate Rocky Patel’s birth year.

Appearance & Construction: The Rocky Patel 1961 is a decent looking cigar. The wrapper is a dark brown color and has a lot of moderately sized veins running throughout. The band is a nice looking white on black with some red accents. The die cut on this band is amazing and outlines the roots and flowers of the tobacco plant pictured on the band.

Smoking Characteristics: As with all Rocky Patel cigars this cigar draws like a champ. There is a nice free draw that produces a ton of thick smoke. The burn is fairly even however the ash is not very strong and fell off at about the half inch mark.

Flavor: The Rocky Patel 1961 cigar does not waste any time getting going. Right off the bat you are greeted with a nice woody core with notes of dark chocolate and a nutty creaminess. The second and final third of the 1961 is a nice woody combination of salty meaty flavors and a touch of sweetness. The body of the cigar is medium to full and the strength is average.

Final Thoughts: Overall I thought the Rocky Patel 1961 was a good cigar. The dark chocolate flavors combined with the woody core of the cigar makes for a good combination. This cigar reminded me of the Cain Maduro which I am pretty big on, but there was something missing that I just can’t put my finger. All in all I think a lot of people with like this new cigar from Rocky Patel and I would be willing to say that this cigar is better than the Patel Bros. that was released at the same time.

I have smoked two of these and two brothers. I like the brothers much better and the 61 seems very high dollar wise for what you get.

  2. Cigar Man says:

Appearance and Construction: The 1961 has a dark chocolate
colored wrapper. There are some light veins and the wrapper is
a bit rough. The stick firmly packed.
Flavor & Notes: There was a sweet earthiness to
the smell. A quick snip opened up the head. The first third of the cigar was bitter, spicy and a little sweet. By the middle third, there was a transition, the bitter pepper tastes yielded to a smooth creamy, buttery, mild chocolate that carried over through the rest of the smoke. There was also a faint nuttiness.
Burn/Ash/Draw: The 1961 lit beautifully, but at the 1/3 mark it started to tunnel. No touchup was required within an inch the burn evened. Ash was a nice light gray that remained firm for a solid inch. Draw was perfect.
Overall: Overall this cigar was good, not very good or great. It wasn’t bad, just not interesting. For $8.50, I’d probably not grab this one again. It was disappointing.
