Background: Savanelli is probably more famous for making tobacco pipes than they are cigars but they have been around for over 15 years now. The R&R Serie Y comes from a small factory in Nicaragua called Rico y Raro which means Rich and Rare in spainish. This cigar is said to be the fullest cigar the Savanelli makes.
Appearance & Construction: A nicely constructed cigar that is virtually seemless. There is one small vein that detrudes from the cigar but other than that this cigar is constructed flawlessly. The band on this cigar is very intricuite, nothing like the Opus band but still really nicely done with nice bright colors.
Smoking Characteristics: The draw on these cigars is okay, a little snug for my liking. The ash is a nice and solid with a little bit of flowering but nothing to complain about. The burn was a little wavy and required some minor touch ups. The body of these cigars is medium to full and the strength is medium.
The Flavor: This cigar starts off with a nice sweet earthy core with notes of coffee, mocha, caramel and toasted almonds. In the second third the toasted almond flavor really comes out and at times has a charry finish which is pleasant. The final third becomes leathery with notes citrus that reminds me of grapefruit.
Final Thoughts: Overall I enjoyed this cigar. The flavors had nice balance to them and were very pleasant. The only draw back to this cigar was the size. At a 56 ring gauge it starts to become a little awkward to smoke and really when I think about it, the draw was fine, it was just the size that made it seem a little sung. I think this is a cigar that can be enjoyed by medium and full bodied smokers.
