Coronado by La Flor Corona Especial – Cigar Review
The Coronado by La Flor is made by none other than Litto Gomez, maker of La Flor Dominicana Cigars. The Coronado gained incredible traction in 2006 by receiving the number two Cigar of the Year by Cigar Aficionado. It has since slowed down in popularity and you don’t hear much about this cigar anymore. This particular Coronado that we are reviewing today was purchased in June of 2008. While the newer production of Coronado’s might be slightly different, I still think this cigar will be a good indication of what this cigar is all about.
Cigar: Coronado by La Flor
Wrapper: Nicaraguan Sun Grown Habano
Binder: Dominican Corojo
Filler: Dominican
Made In: Dominican Republic
Size: Corona Especial – 5 ¾x47
Price: About $7 per single
Appearance & Construction: The Coronado by La Flor is a gorgeous sight. The medium brown colored wrapper has a slight hue of red to it and is glistening with oils. The wrapper doesn’t have much in the way of veins and what veins are there are smooth to the touch and very small. The construction looks great and there are no noticeable defects with the cigar.
Smoking Characteristics: The Coronado has a flawless draw that produces thick clouds of smoke. The burn of the Coronado is even however the ash does flake off in some areas.
Flavors: Usually I don’t comment on the prelight draw of cigar unless it is something out of the norm. Well, the Coronado has my lips tingling before I have even light the cigar. A nice hot spice along with the traditional barnyard flavors are what I get from the prelight draw. Once lit, the Coronado has rich hearty flavors of earth, leather, and spice. After the first inch or so the spice backs down a bit and gives way to some coffee and caramel flavors. In the second third the spice really backs down and is quite smooth. The final third brings on a nice citrusy sweetness almost like orange peel.
Final Thoughts: I have smoked my way through plenty of Coronado’s in the past but this is probably my first one of these in about a year. Why the hell did I wait so long to revisit this cigar; what a fantastic smoke. The Coronado by La Flor is complex and balanced and is my favorite cigar from Litto Gomez. I will say that I do enjoy the Double Conona’s a little more as they seem to have a little more body and punch than the smaller Corona Especiales, but overall I think this is a great smoke.

If these were more in my price range, I’d be all over this line. I’ve had a few of the different sizes and they have all been excellent.
Nice review of a great stick.
