E.P. Carillo Short Run – Cigar Review

E.P. Carillo Short Run – Cigar Review

Today we have the E.P. Carillo Short Run from Ernesto Perez Carrillo, former blender for La Gloria Cubana Cigars. For more background about the transition of Ernesto Carrillo from La Gloria Cubana to his new family ran boutique cigar business, be sure to check out the original review of the E.P. Carrillo Edicion Inaugural 2009 review. Speaking of the Inaugural 2009; the cigar was received so well that Ernesto would not have enough to last till the release of his Core Brand that should be released at the 2010 IPCPR Trade Show that he had no choice but to release the E.P. Carrillo Short Run to get us through.

Appearance & Construction: The E.P. Carrillo Short Run is a pretty nice looking stick. The wrapper is darker brown in color with a slightly marbled appearance and has only a few small veins. The roll looks great as everything is neat and even. The band is simple and elegant looking with its reds, yellows and gold lettering, a real nice looking band.

Smoking Characteristics: The Short Run has an outstanding draw that produces a tone of thick dense smoke. The burn however is very uneven and requires multiple touch ups along the way. I wasn’t able to see how the ash was on these cigars because of all the touch ups.

Flavor: The E.P. Carrillo Short Run starts off with a typical Ecuadorian Sumatra cigar; sweet spiciness. Other flavors in the first third are some nuts, a bit of mocha, and some oakiness. The second third the pepper comes through full force and starts to get me on the back of the throat but by the time the second third ends and the final third begins, the pepperiness disappears into the backdrop. The final third of the cigar is more like the first third but a leathery component is added which is nice. The body of the E.P. Carillo Short Run is medium to full and the strength is average.

Final Thoughts: Overall I think the E.P. Carrillo is a nice cigar. It isn’t overly complex and lacked a little balance in my opinion which is why I rate this as a good/ average cigar. Would I buy more? Yes, I think this is a good cigar for the money and has a good flavor profile that I enjoy. Box worthy, probably not. But I would recommend this cigar as a solid afternoon/ evening cigar.

Cigar Rating: Good/ Average

I just smoked that cigar and found it not very well constructed, I felt some sponginess and when I removed the main label the wrapper cracked. I agree with Adam on the first third of the cigar, but on the second third bitter notes were coming and going for me, the best part of the cigar IMO was the last third – it was very complex. If I would buy that cigar again it would be only for that last third.
