Guillermo Leon Gran Corona – Cigar Review
The Guillermo Leon was released at the 2010 IPCPR Trade Show in New Orleans and was one of two new cigars released at the show from La Aurora. Guillermo Leon is the Vice President of La Aurora Cigars and his family has been in the cigar making industry for over 107 years. Guillermo is a very down to earth man and was actually against the project when he was originally pitched the idea. The Guillermo Leon is only available at your local Brick & Mortar shops as part of a new campaign from Miami Cigar & Company and La Aurora to promote the backbone of the cigar industry.
Guillermo Leon
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Vuetta Arriba
Binder: Cameroon, Dominican Corojo
Filler: Peruvian, Dominican, Brazilian, Nicaraguan
Made In: Nicaragua
Size: Gran Corona, 6×47 (corona gorda)
Price: MSRP is $8.50 per single cigar
Appearance & Construction: The Guillermo Leon is a decent looking stick. The cigar shows a pale kaki colored wrapper with some rippled veins throughout the cigar. The cigar has a little give when pinched between the fingers and seems well constructed.
Smoking Characteristics: The draw on the Guillermo Leon is a little tighter than what I prefer and doesn’t produce a whole lot of smoke. The burn is fairly even and the medium gray colored ash is fairly solid, but I was expecting a little more length due to the dual binders.
Flavor: The Guillermo Leon starts out with a complex array of wood, butterscotch and a slight bit of leather. In the start of the second third the cigar adds some light pepper. After that the cigar remains generally the same throughout the rest of the cigar.
Final Thoughts: Although the Guillermo Leon was pretty much the same throughout, it had a great flavor profile and one that I particularly enjoy. This is another stellar release from La Aurora who has been slowly re-inventing themselves and has been doing some great things with their cigars, i.e. the La Aurora 107. If you are a fan of medium bodied cigars with this type of flavor profile, be sure to grab a handful from your local Brick & Mortar Cigar Shop.
Cigar Rating: Good to Very Good
