Appearance & Construction: The PDR 1878 is a hell of a cigar to look at. The first thing you notice is the tightly rolled pigtail cap that is absolutely stunning. The wrapper is dark brown with a moderate amount of medium sized veins. There is also some slight tooth that covers the PDR 1878. Construction seems good as there are no soft spots, and the roll has nice even seams.

Smoking Characteristics: The draw on the PDR 1878 Cubano Especial is very loose, not a bad loose but a bit more free than your average smoke. You’ll really have to take your time with this one because if you puff on this cigar too much, it will burn hot and not taste good. The burn is very even however and there is a ton of smoke coming off the cigar, I mean this thing is pouring out smoke while sitting in the ash tray. The cigar is literally smoking itself. The one thing that would concern me with this cigar is that a faster smoker would get horrible flavors off of this cigar because it would smoke too hot.

Flavor: The PDR 1878 starts off with a blast of hot pepper, some earth and dark chocolate flavors. As the cigar burns through to the second third, the flavors mellow out a bit into a nice mellow earthiness. The chocolate is there but it’s not really your typical sweet Maduro flavor and I am liking this about this cigar. For the most part the cigar remains generally the same through the thirds so we will bypass breaking it down into thirds in the cigar review.

Final Thoughts: Overall I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the PDR 1878 Cubano Especial Maduro. Again it is not your typical sweet Maduro and I really like that about this cigar. Abe Flores, the master being Pinar del Rio cigars has really out done himself with this cigar. The PDR 1878 is a nice value stick with a nice traditional flavor profile that I would recomend to pretty much anyone.

Cigar Rating: Very Good/ Above Average
