Up for review today is the newly blended, newly released El Triunfador from Pete Johnson, maker of Tatuaje Cigars. The original El Triunfador came in one size, a Lancero, and has a broadleaf wrapper. Although the original El Triunfador Lancero is still in production, Pete decided to expand the El Triunfador line with 6 new vitolas and a new blend. The new El Triunfador features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper and is made in Don Pepin’s My Father Cigar factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Appearance & Construction: The El Triunfador is a nice looking boxed pressed cigar. The wrapper, which is a medium brown in color, is damn near flawless. The cigar has small veins and is smooth to the touch. The construction is top notch; even cut lines, a perfect triple cap, very nice. The band on this cigar is plain yet classic looking and is definitely playing off the old Cuban labels.
Smoking Characteristics: The El Triunfador has a perfect draw to it; smooth with just a bit of resistance. The burn was even throughout the entire cigar and the ash held on for about an inch or so.
Flavor: The El Triunfador starts out with a nice cedary core with notes of coffee, a slight spice, chocolate and a mild nuttiness. The body of the cigar at this point is mild to medium. The second third is much of the same but with the body of the cigar picking up into the medium realm of things. As we enter the final third, the cigar is much sweeter than the previous two thirds and the coffee notes really start to show through.
Final Thoughts: Pete Johnson has hit another home run with the new El Triunfador blend. This cigar was like smoking a mocha cappuccino, a real treat of a cigar. The cigar has nice rich flavors that were so nice and crisp and not too heavy on the palate. Hands down I enjoyed the new blend of the El Triunfador over the original blend and that is saying a lot. Do yourself a favor, pick up at least a 5 pack of the new El Triunfador, you will not be disappointed.
